The original, patented Portable Salt Cave - "Saltpipe" is a natural product which aims to provide relief from breathing problems.
Available in two designs, the "Saltpipe" is the original Saltpipe designed for adults. Whilst this original pipe can be used by all ages, we have also created the "Salphant" which has been specifically developed with children in mind. The Salphant contains the exact same health promoting salt crystals as the original pipe but its friendly elephant design makes it more fun to use.
Invented in Hungary, the Saltpipe contains two ceramic filters containing 50-60 grams of selected Halite salt crystals formed in Hungarian caves around 20 million years ago. Its unique ergonomic design makes it both comfortable and convenient to use.

Air is purified as it is drawn over the salt crystals and the sensation is very much like taking in a deep breath of fresh air at the seaside. The salt micro-particles penetrate deep into the lungs unclogging blockages in the bronchi and bronchioles by restoring the normal transport of mucus. The particles also kill the microbes which can lead to inflammation of lung tissue.

Saltpipe / Salphant are recommended for children who are a minimum 3 years old. In fact, there is no minimum age limit but the reason we recommend that is; that a child who is older than 3 years are more capable of using the Saltpipe. Children need to be taught to inhale through the mouth (normal breathing) and exhale through the nose without blowing air back into the pipe. It is not advisable to blow the air into the pipe because the salt crystal can be damaged.
 Introducing Saltpipe / Salphant to young children; during the first couple of uses of the Saltpipe / Salphant the air is a bit salty and children may put it off. So it is advisable that the parent should use it for couple times and when they feel the salty taste is beginning to disappear then hand it to the child. It is also important for a very young child that a parent should supervise while the child is using the device.
There is no difference between the quality and quantity of contents of the Salphant and adult saltpipe called "Saltpipe" but the elephant shape will make children more motivated to use it.

How did the Portable Salt Cave - "Saltpipe" start?
The Portable Salt Cave - Saltpipe derives from an ancient natural salt treatment which has been used for decades for treating respiratory problems. During the WWII, residents of a German city of Ennepetal were using Klutert cave as a bomb shelter. Amazingly, they found that they were coughing considerably less and breathing easier with each air raid. Later on it was confirmed by scientists that many of those using the cave as a bomb shelter were indeed cured of their asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other diseases of the respiratory tract. The healthy individuals hiding in that cave had strengthened their immunity and stopped catching colds. Europeans have long had the advantage of special clinics in salt caves to help alleviate their breathing problems. This method has been named "Speleotherapy."
Scientists developed the medical device called a halogenerator, or Microclimate aerosol chamber. The modern Microclimate Aerosol Chamber uses state of the art technology to completely reproduce the atmosphere of the clinics located in salt caves or in special mines, and it has a monitored therapeutic microclimate. Air with low concentrations of curative NaCl (salt) is ionized and saturated with a natural substance.

In Romania there are also many salt lakes - Sovata with 7 salt lakes, Ocna Sibiului with 52 salt lakes in S-W of Transilvania, very well known in the treatment of infertility, metabolic diseases, skin diseases. These salt lakes were usually formed by collapsing of salt caves ceilings. All these salt lakes have different salinity, increasing with deepness - from 9g/l to 320g/l.
From Salt Therapy to Saltpipe?
 Going to the salt-chamber (halochamber) or salt mine is inaccessible for everyone. Even though there has been some inventions about how to make the device for inhaling salty air such as Aerosol, Mr. Imre Bekefi and Mr. Laszlo Budai from Hungary successfully invented the first Saltpipe in the world in 2002. They both had been subjected to asthma and allergy. They used the Salt-Chamber and visit Salt caves several times to treat the illness but without regularly basis, it is difficult to get rid of this problem. Also, visiting salt caves and halo chamber are costly and time consuming.
Inventing the Saltpipe is great success that they can obtain the treatment at homes. Saltpipe now has become one of the natural devices in Halotherapy providing the salty air through a handy ceramic container.
"Two men, from Budapest, invented a Saltpipe which is filled with minerals, mined from salt-caves.

Notices about the experiences in connection with the "Saltpipe" used in the case of 10 patients:
10 patients were using the "Saltpipe" in the period starting in October 2002, finishing in February 2003, for 2-3 months of duration. These patients were suffering from respiratory illnesses; 3 of them suffered from chronic bronchitis, 7 of them from asthma bronchioles: 2 of this 7 people had severe bronchitis. 4 patients out of the 10 were females and 6 of them were males. 2 patients between the age of 50 & 55, 3 between the age 55 & 60, 2 of them were between 60 & 65, and only one of the patients was above 70. Out of these 10 patients 6 suffers from heart diseases, which aggravated the applicability of antispasmodic sprays - for the bronchial tubes - because of the side effects, which exert the functioning of the heart. I was trying to choose patients whose illness was severe (chronic bronchitis, and/or asthma bronchial).
The experiences of the patients show that the Saltpipe helps to dissolve sediments, helps in the process of discharge and doing so, easing their breathing. As a doctor, I found the Saltpipe a very effective complementary tool in the therapy of patients with respiratory illnesses. We can almost equalize the effects of the mineral-filled air inhaled through the Saltpipe with the effects of the salt caverns (apart from the fact that the temperature of air inhaled through the Saltpipe is identical with body temperature), further more, it is more moderate from a financial point of view than the expenses of salt cavern therapies.
As a summary I would like to conclude the followings:
The secretion-discharge is easier and so, the breathing of the patient becomes more relieved. How to use it?
Place the saltpipe between your lips and inhale normally, exhaling through the nose. Breathing has to be done with normal intensity. Forced breathing should be avoided. It is recommended to use the device for 15-25 minutes daily, but you can repeat the use of the saltpipe more than once a day. In order to achieve better results, the device should be used continuously and not at odd times. You may experience a salty taste at first but this will be lessened.
Is the salt inside the pipe similar to table salt?
No, the salt inside the pipe is pure Halite mineral Salt crystal formed in middle Miocene period. This kind of salt crystals has been subjected to enormous pressure over millions of years. The pressure is responsible for creating the salt crystals. The higher the amount of pressure the more superior or excellent the state of order within the crystalline structure.
What is the small rubber valve on the Saltpipe?
The little rubber valve on the top of the "Saltpipe" is a back-strike valve, which functions when someone does not exhale through the nose, but blows the air back into the "Saltpipe"; the valve strikes back, blocking the way of air towards the pipe, thereby this way protecting it from humidity and vapor making contact with salt crystals. Please do not peel it off.

Why do we have to exhale through the nose?
Taking the "Saltpipe" into our mouth we have to inhale through it, and blow the air out through the nose. (We don't have to take deep breath, we should breathe with normal intensity), This is very important, because this is the only way that the salt crystal-mixture can reach the upper respiratory tracts ( maxillary sinus.. ) and that's how it cleans the whole breathing system.

What do we have to protect the Saltpipe from?

How do you clean the Saltpipe instrument?
Clean the device with slightly damp cloth only on the outside of the device. Water must not get into the device.
